Washington DC Trip

Smithsonian Library - All of the Smithsonians are free and you could spend hours and hours in these museums looking at all the science and history. The favorite room was the "dress room" which had all the 1st ladies dresses that they wore on inauguration day or to the ball, all the way back to Martha Washington, followed by the butterfly room.

At the Smithsonian

On the way home we were taking a back highway to bypass a toll road and out in the middle of nowhere we came across a Pennsylvania field with a marker that says "Flight 93 Memorial". We had no idea that this would be on our way but made an impromptu stop at the temporary memorial to the flight that went down here on 9/11. In the field behind this picture is where the plane actually landed. A few things that we learned and thought were significant - This flight was headed to the Capitol building where legislatures were in session. 20 minutes more flight time and it would have hit it's target. The plane was delayed 45 minutes at take off - allowing those who called 911 and home from the plane an opportunity to learn about the twin towers, giving them insight into what was going on and to fight back, not wait and see what would happen. The flight was only 20% full that day. This was such a sobering day and really brought home what we had been teaching the girls all week - just how precious our freedom is and to never take it for granted.
